In order for your letter to be at its most efficient (for short, getting the reader’s attention), it must follow the basic guidelines of a business letter.
A business letter addresses three general issues. These are:
- why you are writing, indicated in the first paragraph
- what you can provide or offer to the company, indicated in the second paragraph
- how you will follow up, indicated in the third paragraph.

First things first, a good resume’ cover letter must be able to answer the basic question of why you should be hired in the first place. The fact of the matter is that a resume’ cover letter must be able to grab the attention of the employers enough for them to be able to have a good and valid reason that you stand out of all the other applicants.

Remember that a lot of customers are not into features but actually only consider to buy because of the benefits. It is important therefore for you to make your customer buy into you.

Writing a good cover letter is the best way to sell yourself to an employer. It is written very differently from a resume. A lot of qualified job applicants haven’t even got themselves a job interview because their cover letters were not interesting enough for the employer. Cover letters give an employer a chance to get to know the applicant even before he meets them.

The recruiting industry has changed dramatically since the mid-90’s when the Internet began to catch fire as a networking tool. Prior to the advent of online job boards such as CareerBuilder and Monster, your local newspaper had a monopoly on “help-wanted” advertising going back pre-Industrial Revolution (I remember a few years back being quoted $450 to run a 3-line ad over the weekend–for $50 more I could add a black border around it).
